10/01/2012: Sustainable land management now officially rewarded!

The SALM methodology has been approved under the VSC Program.

In December 2011, a new methodology to quantify and credit the greenhouse gas benefits of sustainable agricultural land management (SALM) practices has been approved under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. It rewards farmers for implementing sustainable farming practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon stocks in the agricultural landscape. An important advantage of the methodology is the fact that it is applicable to both, large and small scale farms.

Soil & More works on the development of pilot projects under the SALM methodology. One of these projects is located in Egypt, where desert soils are reclaimed through regular compost application while carbon is being sequestered.
This pilot could be the first project where organic certified farmers are financially rewarded for the sequestration of soil carbon following an officially approved VCS standard.
