18/01/2012: Soil & More contributes to new book on climate change mitigation and agriculture

A book revealing the state of global agricultural climate change mitigation with a focus on achieving mitigation amongst smallholder farmers.

A new book, revealing the state of global agricultural climate change mitigation has recently been published by Earthscan (ISBN 978-1-84971-393-1). With a focus on identifying the feasibility, opportunities and challenges for achieving mitigation amongst smallholder farmers, this book is a must read for all those who are looking into possibilities to mitigate climate change within the agricultural sector. The book includes chapters about experiences in developing and developed countries. Tobias Bandel, one of Soil & More’s managing partners, also shares his experience with greenhouse gas measurement and accounting using the Cool Farm Tool.

The impact of the agricultural sector on climate change remains rather important: The total global contribution of agriculture to greenhouse gas emissions - including emissions derived from land use changes – is estimated to be between 17 and 32%. This shows the impact the agricultural sector could have on mitigating climate change. An important possibility to lower its contribution to climate change is the implementation of sustainable land management practices. A new methodology rewarding such practices has recently been approved under the VCS program.
